A Lake Crystal man is running as an Independent write-in candidate in the House 23B Special Election.
Nicholas Schmitz grew up in the district and lives near Lake Crystal. He works for the Mankato School District and raises beef cattle part-time.
His campaign says he's running as a write-in candidate due to state regulations. Currently, Minnesota state law requires all Minor party candidates and Independents to collect 500 petition signatures in a 4-day period to have their name printed on the ballot.
DFL and Republican candidates need to pay a filing fee to have their name included.
He's asking voters to pay it forward and build community connections instead of donating to his campaign.
