Meal Prep To Help Make Healthy Eating Easier

Posted: Updated:

The start of a New Year means setting new resolutions.

"This time of year a lot of people are making their New Year's resolutions and for a lot of people that means eating healthier, losing weight or whatever that may be," Hy-Vee dietician Jordana Schreiner says.

Schreiner says meal prepping is a great place to start.

"We're all busy people. We need those different shortcuts and things to make eating healthy a lot easier for us," she says.

Because when it comes to weight loss, researchers say fitness is 20% exercise and 80% nutrition.

"Really our plates should be looking like half is fruit and vegetables, a quarter protein, a quarter grain," she says.

Which is why planning your meals ahead of time can help you stay on track.

"When we're busy we come home at night, we don't know what we're going to have for dinner. That's when we tend to grab those foods that aren't as healthy for us. The frozen pizza, the fast food, things like that," Schreiner says.

Not only does prepping your meals give you control over what you're eating, but how much you're eating as well.

"We want to make sure we're eating right throughout the day. Making sure we're not skipping meals because when we skip meals we tend to overeat later so I actually recommend having two to three small snacks in between your meals so you don't let yourself get too hungry."

Because reaching for the right ingredients will ultimately help you reach your goals.
