Kids Ice Fish Free For "Take A Kid Ice Fishing Weekend"

Posted: Updated:

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is encouraging Minnesotans to brave the cold this weekend.

As part of the Take-A-Kid Ice Fishing weekend, Minnesotans fish free with kids 15 or younger.

From Jan. 13-15 those accompanied by an adult can fish or dark-house spear without an angling or spearing license.

This outdoor tradition has become a semiannual event to promote fishing for younger generations.

"Of course we hope that sparks a lifelong interest in fishing and they'll go on to purchase a license on their own. But, the main idea is just to promote the opportunity to go fishing," MinnAqua education specialist Deb Groebner said.

Groebner says the number one priority when ice fishing this weekend is safety.
