Mount Kato Provides Opportunity To Compete On Slalom Courses

Posted: Updated:
MANKATO, MN -

Dozens of skiers hit the slope Sunday afternoon, with an eye to beat a personal best.

The family fun ski race is an event that is held on most Sundays throughout the winter months to introduce skiers to both slalom and giant slalom (GS).

A unique element to these runs, they're for kids of all ages.

Director of alpine skiing services John Romberg said "It's great in the sense that a lot of these parents, they're shuttling their kids to races throughout the winter just like other sports. But this gives them an opportunity to experience what they're children are doing as far as ski racing. So, you know coming together both child and parent and racing, it's just a great thing."

Similar to what you'd see in the Olympics, these competitors aren't racing against each other but race the clock.

Mount Kato conducts a NASTAR program in which pace setters run a time on each course, equivalent to a par in golf and compares to that of Olympic skiers like Daron Rahlves and Ted Ligety.

Pace setter Dave Abel said "Here, we’ll race down and what my time is is given a handicap which is the same as anybody’s across the country. So, it’s a neat system in which everybody can compare themselves against the big dogs so to speak. So, they have a lot of fun.”

Based on the age and experience of each racer, a handicap is given, allowing them to not only see how they stack up with similar skiers in the area but all over the nation, focusing on personal growth in their time on the slopes.

11-year-old Madeline Cooney said "I feel more confident that I don't have to beat other people, I just have to beat the scoreboard."

Individuals had the option of paying $10 for three runs or $18 for an unlimited amount of attempts, with all the proceeds going toward the Mount Kato Jr. Race Team.
