The Martin County West girls basketball team is moving on in the section 3AA tournament thanks in part to the play of Maverick junior, Alyssa Williamson.

KEYC News 12 Sports Rob Clark has more on why Williamson is our KEYC Scheels All Sports Girls Prep Athlete of the Week.

"I've had a pretty good season this year, I've been scoring more than I have in previous years. I just really like to look to the basket, and take what the defense gives me, I like to move fast and go quick," said Williamson, prep athlete of the week.

Alyssa Williamson can do a little bit of everything on the court, playing sound defense, and threatening to score from anywhere on the floor.

"I think just her consistency scoring from inside and outside. Her shooting has been very good, whether it's around the perimeter, and just getting to the basket. She's also becoming a better passer, we keep working on that, but she brings such a scoring aspect to our team that we're okay with that too," said Rodger Taylor, MCW head coach.

"When we have the big situations, I always have a lot of energy and motivation to keep working hard. I like trying to make things happen toward the end of games," said Williamson.

"She's only going to get better as she continues to work, but she does some nice things, and she's certainly been a good spark for us. She receives a lot of benefit from her teammates in transition because she runs the floor well so she scores a lot of layups as well. She's a great kid, great competitor," said Taylor.

Basketball runs in the family, and who knows, maybe her younger brother Brayden could become a Prep Athlete of the Week.

But for now, Alyssa's leadership and scoring ability are why she's our KEYC Scheels All Sports Girls Prep Athlete of the Week.
