The city of Mankato is recognized for its ongoing effort to protect drinking water.
At Monday night's city council meeting, the community was given a Source Water Protection Award by the Minnesota Department of Health and the Minnesota Rural Water Association.
Mankato's efforts to protect drinking water include its Wellhead Protection Plan, adopted in 2014, where city staff began identifying wells that needed to be sealed along with locating abandoned wells.
Mankato also developed an innovative water conservation and reuse program.
The city is one of 495 public water suppliers in the state currently implementing protection plans.
