MANKATO, MINN -- Mankato City Council has passed a resolution for a new celebratory day in Mankato

The second Monday in October will now become known as Indigenous Peoples Day.

A group of native  people from several tribes across Minnesota made the suggestion to the council back in April.

The resolution passed with a 6 to 1 vote last night.

Supporters say the day will be used to recognize the communal bond between the City of Mankato and local tribes.

"Indigenous Peoples Day," is also meant to change the perception and narrative surrounding the day, which is federally recognized as Columbus Day.
