Minnesota's Safe Routes to School program is gaining traction, rounding out the top three in the nation.

Minnesota ranks just behind California and Washington.

The report by the Safe Routes to School National Partnership looked at core topics, including active transportation, funding, and state physical activity planning.

It found over 12 percent of Kindergarten through 8th graders walk or bike to school in Minnesota.

Strengths included the adoption of Complete Streets policies and goals to lower walking and bicycling fatalities.

More than 300 schools in Minnesota have Safe Routes to School plans and hundreds of teachers have been trained in bicycle in pedestrian safety.
