The area received up to 3 1/2 of rain in less than two hours, which overwhelmed the water treatment system.  The system usually handles 700 gallons of water a minute, but the storm increased that amount to 7,000 gallons a minute.

According to the City of Blue Earth, the decision was made to bypass the treatment plant and divert the wastewater into the river, in order to keep the plant from being destroyed.

The city has stopped diverting the water and is urging people to stay away from the river for the next few days.
