ST. PETER, Minn. -- The City of Saint Peter is adding two improvements to its Hallett's Pond.

The "Hidden Jewel of St. Peter" will receive a fishing pier and asphalt trail for walking and biking.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources approved a grant of $27,706, which will be matched by the city.

City Administrator Todd Prafke said the match will bring the project's total to a little over $55,000.
"Councils had a plan since the early 2000s to try and make these improvements," said Prafke.

"The city owns property, around well about three-fourths of the entire pond, and so that's how we have the ability to do it."
The asphalt addition will be completed in 2018, but the pier section may be done as late as early 2019.
