ST. PETER, Minn. -- The Minnesota Security Hospital in St. Peter recently started a $70.2 million expansion and renovation, and demolition on the old living facilities began today.

The remodel will renovate the 100,000 existing square feet of space and add 87,000 square feet of additional living space.

Carol Olson, executive director of the hospital, said the project took six years of planning, and that the top priority is safety. The new facilities will be razed down to one floor and each unit will be no larger than 20 beds.

The entire project should be completed by the spring of 2020.
