(WATONWAN COUNTY, Minn) Prosecutors are now seeking 1st Degree murder charges against the St. James man accused of killing his wife and her daughter in June.

59-year-old Scott Francis Engelbrecht is currently facing two counts of second-degree murder in connection with the deaths of 67-year-old Joyce Engelbrecht and 43-year-old Rachel Linder.

A grand jury is being summoned for September 19 and 20 at the Watonwan County Courthouse to push for first degree charges.

That means if convicted, Engelbrecht could serve life in prison without parole or life with the eligibility of parole after 30 years.

The current charges carry a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison per count.

After a competency evaluation by the state, a Watonwan County judge found Wednesday that Engelbrecht's trial could proceed.
