Mankato Brewery Promotes Cancer Awareness with New Beer
MANKATO -- Mankato Brewery has something new on tap this November.
In a collaboration with Lupulin Brewing Company in Big Lake, Minn., they've created Hero Hazy IPA: a fruity, floral double IPA with notes of grapefruit and pineapple, wrapped in the brewery's signature comic book-themed packaging.
The superhero? Greater Mankato Growth president Jonathan Zierdt.
"I've always wanted to do something special for Jonathan, around his cancer and the fight that he's had against cancer," said Lupulin Brewing Company owner Jeff Zierdt, who is also Jonathan's brother.
Jonathan's cancer journey started five years ago when he was diagnosed with kidney cancer, and then later an aggressive form of prostate cancer. The kidney cancer is in remission, but Jonathan continues to battle his prostate cancer, in between rounds of chemotherapy when he assisted Mankato Brewery in mixing its first batch of the beer he graces.
The double IPA (8.18 ABV, 66 IBU) features some goofy numbers representing its alcoholic content, but they also represent something more significant. Jonathan was born on August 18, 1966.
The beer's purpose, according to the breweries, is to build awareness of men's health and cancer. Mankato Brewery will release it on November 1 from 6-8 p.m. during its Grow MANkato Shavedown. After that, it will appear on shelves and in taprooms across Minnesota and eastern North and South Dakota.
Mankato Brewery will also donate 20 cents per can to Jonathan's fundraiser, the Love Box campaign, which gives handcrafted gift boxes to other patients and survivors of cancer.
If you'd like to contribute to Jonathan's campaign, you can purchase Hero Hazy IPA anywhere beginning November 1, or text JZFULLYALIVE to 444999.
