MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) -The Saint Clair/Loyola golf team features one of the top players in our area. Claire Orcutt continues to impress by posting low scores every week.
That's why the senior is our KEYC News 12 Prep Athlete of the Week brought to you by Scheels.
"I've improved on the course with short game and long game but most importantly I think I've improved my mental game because I mean in the past it's been kind of tough whenever I've had a bad round I'd always blame myself for it but not I'm definitely more mentally strong and I think that's definitely helped out a lot," said Claire Orcutt, Prep Athlete of the Week.
"I think her emotions are the best things out there, she's really level–headed, she doesn't let one hole ruin her round of golf or anything she just kind of grinds through it. She'll have a bad hole, she started off the other day with a double bogey and still grinded through her entire round and shot an 84 at the end which is a great round for her," said St. Clair/Loyola head coach, Coltt Ullom.
As a dedicated player and the only senior on the team, Orcutt's attitude and work ethic rubs off on other players.
"I think I set a really good, positive example for the younger kids just because I'm always working at it trying to get better and I think they see that and really look up to me for that," Orcutt said.
"I think it really gives the girls something to strive at. I know last meet even, we were golfing and the other coaches are saying it's nice to get their girls to golf with Claire just to see kind of where you got to get to the next level to where their girls are good and they're number one girls but they're just not quite at that state caliber level that Claire's at," Ullom said.
Golf is in Orcutt's blood, she has learned a great deal from her Dad, and is following in his collegiate footsteps.
"I am attending Creighton in Omaha where I'll be playing for the women's golf team. My Dad actually played at Creighton too so I'm going to be kind of continuing that legacy," Orcutt said.
"She's meticulous about what she does, she has a way that she wants to do everything so I think that's perfect for any college coach I know when we were talking to some college coaches just saying you know, she's that perfect golfer you want. She's always asking for suggestions and stuff. I know her Dad does a lot of stuff with her so we try to take a step back sometimes and everything but you know she's a great coachable athlete, she's always ready, she's never missed a meet in all her years of golfing or anything for anything so she's been at every meet and kind of been our number one golfer for four years, really," Ullom said.
Her determination to get better every day is why Claire Orcutt is our KEYC News 12 Prep Athlete of the Week, brought to you by Scheels.
