ST. PAUL, Minn. (KEYC) - An effort by House Republicans to force a vote to end the emergency powers of Governor Tim Walz fails once again.
The resolution would have ended the peacetime emergency first enacted in March. Walz has used it to issue dozens of emergency orders related to the pandemic. Rep. Kurt Daudt requested the resolution be brought directly to the floor. His motion to do so was defeated 69-63.
Walz has said he is open to ending the peacetime emergency if legislators pass laws that he says have been critical to the state’s pandemic response. Those include measures to protect workers, change the state’s unemployment insurance program, and require face coverings in public indoor spaces.
The Governor’s emergency powers are set to expire Wednesday.
