MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) — The Bethany Lutheran College women’s basketball team made the most of an abbreviated regular season campaign by capturing the program’s second straight UMAC regular-season title on Monday.
The Vikings only lost one game in the seven played this year and capped off the campaign with a dominant 88-69 victory over North Central.
The hardware comes after coming together as a team and dealing with all the ups and downs thrown at student-athletes.
“We looked at this season at one game at a time. There was a lot of ups and downs, being on, being off, playing as pods, not being in pods, off completely. The team made it a point to get better each day and we have,” head coach Lyle John stated.
”We finally got it together, we’re clicking, we’re working together. We got our defense together and slowed down on offense. We just executed everything coach ]Lyle John] said really well, that’s what we have to do to win,” senior forward Hanna Geistfeld added.
The Vikings finished in a three-way tie atop the UMAC for the regular-season title and now come into the postseason tournament as the third-seeded team.
The eight-team bracket tips off with quarterfinals action on Thursday, with the Vikings playing host to Martin Luther College.
Bethany has won each of the past two conference postseason tournaments.
