Elysian dedicates memorial to service members
ELYSIAN, Minn. (KEYC) - Saturday afternoon dozens gathered for the dedication of the Elysian Area Veterans Memorial.
Members of the community, veterans and present day service members were all in attendance for the event. The event featured guest speakers, music and more.
The project was started in 2019 when American Legion Post 311′s former president Sharon Brandt brought their idea to the town.
Brandt says she always knew that the town would bring their support.
“This town has such a deep level of patriotism. To see them come out and support this no matter where they’re going for the weekend or staying here it is a blessing. It is a blessing and it is an honor to live in this little town.” (FORMER AMERICAN LEGION PRESIDENT SHARON BRANDT)
Community members, local businesses and businesses from neighboring towns helped raise over $50,000 for the memorial in six months.
Elysian Mayor Tom McBroom says he knows how much everyone has gone through in the past year and was happy to see all that the people could accomplish. “This is a very humbling experience. To see the number of veterans in attendance and members of surrounding American Legion posts is really remarkable and just shows how much we pulled together in trying times.”
The memorial remembers the sacrifices both current and former service members have given for their country and the ones they love.
Service members from the area were there to show their support.
“It is a small town but it is a big memorial. I think they do many things big here because being a good citizen and being patriotic is big.”
