ST. PAUL, Minn. (KEYC) - The Minnesota Department of Education says enrollment in public schools is down for the current school year compared to last year.

According to a report released this morning, 2,146 fewer students are enrolled in public schools across the state compared to the 2020-2021 school year. That accounts for a 0.3 percent decrease.

Meanwhile, nonpublic schools saw a 5.8% enrollment increase, while homeschooling saw a 10.2% decrease from 2020-21 to the current school year.

MDE says this year’s public kindergarten class saw an increase of 5.2%, showing a rebound from the 9% decrease that was seen between 2019-20 and 2020-21.

All enrollment data for the current school year is based on enrollment counts at Minnesota schools on October 1, 2021.
