Windom Area Hospital opened a new treatment center Monday for patients with chronic, non-healing wounds.

The Wound and Hyperbaric Healing Center caters to people with a compromised ability to heal. Among those are seniors, cancer survivors, amputees and, very frequently, diabetics.

After consultation, some patients will be referred to Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, which entails 30 minute sessions in chambers that simulate deep sea diving.

That pressure creates higher oxygen levels, which better facilitates the restoration of blood vessels.

Treatment lasts an average of six weeks per patient.
