MANKATO, MN - This morning, Minnesota State University Mankato kicked off the school year in their annual convocation ceremony.

University employees packed the ballroom at the Centennial Student Union for the celebration.

President Richard Davenport reflected on the university's past 150 years and what the future holds for the institution.

Dr. Barbara Carson, a professor in the Department of Sociology and Corrections, said: "I think that the university brings a lot to our community.  It brought me, for example, I came here 27 years ago from growing up in Illinois.  It brings a lot of rich cultures to our community.  It brings our art.  It brings our services."

It will be a busy week at the school.  Thursday is 'move-in' day.  Nearly 4,000 cars are expected to crowd the campus while students move into the dorms.
