Mankato East junior, Jett Oachs,  is eyeing a return trip to the state cross country meet after qualifying for the big race as a sophomore.

Rob Clark has more on why Oachs is our KEYC News 12 Prep Athlete of the Week brought to you by Scheels.

"I feel like I just try to focus on the whole race, but my second mile is where I really try to focus on because that will kill you, and then the last mile, I just give it all I have," said Oachs, Prep Athlete of the Week.

"Last year, he was one of the big boys running varsity, and then he kind of decided he could do this, and started coming along in the end. We had a conversation about state as a team, state as an individual, we're looking better at state as an individual. He destroyed it last year at sections and went to state. Since then, he's decided he needs to be the man at the front leading the charge. Whoever else is willing to try, he's going to try and beat them," said Chris Ward, Mankato East head coach.

"To compete at state was awesome, it felt really good to be there. I was there to see what I could do, and hopefully this year I'll place higher up," said Oachs.

Oachs times continue to drop this season and the junior is running right around the 16 minute mark  with hopes of cracking into the high 15's before the year is over.

"It's pretty tough to keep coming down in times when you're already pretty fast. Jett has a great work ethic in practice, but if he has a super power, it's the fact that he can endure. He can push himself harder than anybody else out there. For the team to see that from one of their teammates, it not only pushes the team, but he's pushed by the team too," said Ward.

Oachs determination is why he's our KEYC News 12 Prep Athlete of the Week  brought to you by Scheels.
