Prep Athlete: Mankato West's Charlie Pickell
Mankato, MN-- Two–time state champion and Class AA's top–ranked wrestler at 132 is eyeing another title in his junior season.
Rob Clark caught up with Mankato West's Charlie Pickell and has more on why he's our KEYC News 12 Prep Athlete of the Week brought to you by Scheels.
"So when I started off wrestling, it was more I wanted to be better than my dad was. After I won state, I realized my dad has never done that, and now it's just like I'm trying to beat school records. That's on my goal list, and the 200 win mark, that's always been a big goal of mine," said Pickell, Prep Athlete of the Week.
"Very exciting wrestler to watch, there is a lot of technique out of him that you wouldn't be able to see out of wrestlers across the state. He has a vast knowledge of technique and knows a lot of moves. He's really exciting to watch every time he steps on the mat. You actually see kids from other teams kind of surround his mat and want to watch him as well. It's not just the Mankato area, but he has a big impact on the sport of wrestling all throughout the state of Minnesota," said Lee Burg, Mankato West head coach.
After finishing as a runner–up in the state wrestling tournament a year ago, Mankato West's Charlie Pickell came back this season as strong as ever highlighted with a Rumble on the Red Title for the first time in his career.
"It made me feel like I'm back on top. I was a little nervous coming back into this season because I didn't do any summer wrestling like I had in previous years. It gave me a boost of confidence, and made me feel relieved because I haven't won that tournament in the past two years. I finally turned it around and won that tournament," said Pickell.
The junior aspires to wrestle at the Division I level in college, but for now, Pickell's focus is set on winning a third state championship in four years.
"Working hard every–day, pushing myself to the limit, just doing everything I can to get it done. No mistakes," said Pickell.
Pickell's dominance is why he's our KEYC News 12 Prep Athlete of the Week brought to you by Scheels.
