Food Friday: Patrick's On Third
ST. PETER-- We have our own southern Minnesota town known for its Irish heritage, and a bar and grill that works hard to remind us of that.
Patrick's on Third, located on 125 S 3rd Street, is known for its support for the drum corps, craft beer and food, and community contributions, especially when it comes to the St. Patrick's Parade in St. Peter.
Owner John Mayer said they like to go big or go home for the holiday.
"The interesting thing about St. Patrick's Day here in St. Peter is we are officially the largest St. Patrick's Day parade in the state of Minnesota."
Patrick's On Third is a fun place to be, simply because the food and beer is great, and the staff is full of fun personalities.
The bar and grill is heavily decorated with about 700 different beer taps placed on the walls, games, pictures of past members of the Govenaires drum corps., and St. Patrick's Day decorations.
General Manager Mathias Ove said they have a week of fun setup, and as they get closer to the holiday, the entertainment increases.
"Saturday night we have a band, it's a Bad Liquor Management featuring Erik Koskinen and that starts at 8 o 'clock this Saturday, and then we have a free keg of green beer at midnight on Saturday, " said Ove. " And then we'll party all day on Sunday."
The 31-year-old business is not just about partying and eating, they make sure to connect to local organizations, giving back anyway they can.
" Patrick's is kind of the community gathering hub, we are where the locals meet, we sport and sponsor a lot of local activities," said Ove.
" The art. the school, and we get a lot of support back from the community."
The bar and grill is definitely a big deal in the community, but the food is what draws people in. They have items like the Beer-Battered Guinness Fish Tacos and The Reuben, available every day, but their Shepherd's Pie is featured only on the Irish menu for a limited time.
"Our Reuben is slow-roasted homemade corned beef, thousand-island, sauerkraut, on thick cut marble rye," said Ove.
" And our Shepherd's Pie, best way to describe it is it's Irish Tater Tot Hot Dish, it's mashed potatoes, vegetables, ground beef, and puff pastry with cheese."
