After 134 years, Sleepy Eye's St. John's Lutheran School will close its doors at the end of this school year.

The decision was made due to low enrollment, fiscal expenditures, and the age of the building. Principal Dan Rick has taken another teaching job north of Milwaukee, one staffer has been reassigned to another Lutheran school and the other will be provided a severance. Principal Rick says students have the option to transition to one of the four area Lutheran schools.

"We are going to actually provide the tuition and transportation for those current students in our school and hopefully they will take advantage of that next school year," Principal Rick said.

There are no plans currently for the building, but the principal hopes to see it become a youth center focused on youth ministry while also offering vocal or instrument lessons.
