MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) - Officials from the cities of Mankato and North Mankato joined us in a special update at 4:00 to talk about their response to the flood and answer some common questions we’ve been hearing. Video from North Mankato officials is below. Text information from the City of Mankato is below the player.

CITY OF MANKATO UPDATE

The Minnesota River at Mankato is near its predicted crest at 29.5 feet. City staff continue to patrol the levee and flood control system on a 24-hour basis. The levee system is built to handle a river level of 39.5 ft.

The City is thankful to the dedicated staff, responders and volunteers who have been working throughout Mankato to keep the community as dry as possible.

Warren Street between Riverfront Drive and Front Street has reopened after being inspected and repaired follwing Friday’s flash flooding.

As of 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, the following closures are in place:

  • Land of Memories Park
  • North side of Sibley Park (softball field side)
  • Kiwanis Recreation Area
  • Mni Waste Park
  • Riverfront Park amphitheater
  • Minnesota River Trail between Sibley Park and Riverfront Park and between Highway 14 and Kiwanis Recreation Area

For your safety, do not go around barriers of any closed areas. Do not enter closed parks or trails. Do not walk or bike beyond barriers. Although the water may look calm, there are often dangerous currents.

What to Do with Flood-Damaged Debris

The debris drop-off site at 155 Sakatah Drive remains open for Mankato residents. Mankato residents can bring flood-damaged household waste (damaged personal goods) and construction and demolition debris removed by the homeowner to the site through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

Not accepted at the debris drop-off site:

  • No electronics. Damaged electronics should be taken to GreenTech Recycling, 205 West Spring St., Mankato.
  • No hazardous waste. Household hazardous waste should be taken to the Blue Earth County Household Hazardous Waste Facility, 651 Summit Ave, Mankato.

Residents should place organic debris, such as branches, wood or other vegetation, at the curbside for City staff to pick up. For trees on private property that have fallen as a result of flooding, residents will need to call a licensed arborist for tree removal.
