MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) - Friends of Jessenland recently purchased the old historic Jessenland church building to continue their mission of preserving area history.

Friends of Jessenland is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and celebrating the history and culture of the Minnesota River Valley area. They will carefully restore and renovate the old church to preserve its history while adapting it to the current needs of the community.

The building dates back to 1870 and was the focal point of Minnesota’s first Irish settlement. It has an architecture style similar to Greek Revolution and had a touch of Gregorian architecture style overtones.

Once the renovations and restorations are done, there will be rotating and permanent displays and exhibits, cultural events, community events, and research and archives.

“There will be the ability to research your genealogy and heritage,” said Wendy Driscoll, vice president of Friends of Jessenland. “There will be the ability to look up a name and then go up to the cemetery on the hill above and research where those grave markers are and learn more about their families.”

Friends of Jessenland are thrilled and hope to have a grand opening in the spring pf 2026. They invite community members, local businesses, and history enthusiasts to support this transformative project. They are also currently accepting donations. Donations can be sent to PO Box 234 Henderson, MN 56044 or made online at www.jessenland.org.
