Ceremony for Reconciliation and Remembrance on Indigenous Peoples Day
MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) - One organization is celebrating by hosting a ceremony for reconciliation and remembrance.
Veterans for Peace is a one of many groups once again joining in on Indigenous Peoples Day events in Mankato.
On Monday, Oct. 14, a Veterans for Peace Ceremony for Reconciliation and Remembrance will take place at Reconciliation Park, to recognize 38 Dakota Men who were hanged on December 26, 1862.
“We stop every minute and then ring the bell and hit a drum and we do that for 38 -a silent procession- for 38 minutes,” said Dave Logsdon, President Chapter 27 Veterans For Peace.
Logsdon says they have incorporated ways to recognize each person at the ceremony. Dr. Chris Mato, a retired Indigenous Nations & Dakota Studies professor and Dakota member from the Upper Sioux Community, will be at the annual event.
The group’s message is to put an end to war. And some of those veterans not only share that message, but also share Indigenous history.
