MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) - The city of Mankato plans to keep the wreath bright, and prevent any red lights.

Until December 31, Mankato Public Safety will hold a campaign to promote fire safety.

In front of the public safety center will be a giant wreath, lit with clear bulbs.

Any time a fire happens, new colors are added to the wreath to replace the clear lights: red which represents preventable fires, and blue which represents preventable fire-related injuries.

Mankato Public Safety says there are many ways to decrease fire risks during the holiday season.

Here’s a few: watch candles, stay in the kitchen while cooking, don’t let your holiday trees get dry, and don’t overload electrical circuits or extension cords.
