MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) -

“Which can get people into a lot of trouble really quickly.” Said, DNR Recreation Safety Outreach Coordinator, Lisa Dugan.

Many lakes have frozen over around the state, and especially here in Southern Minnesota as our local lakes begin to build ice. The DNR reminds everyone to be safe when heading out to explore the Land of 10,000 lakes.

“What you really want for like ideal ice making conditions is several days of consistently below freezing temperatures. That’s daytime and nighttime freezing temperatures. To really get that like that, clear new ice and a minimum of four inches before setting out.” Dugan added.

With the coldest days of the winter season taking place this week, it’s setting up to be a busy weekend for anglers and with many expected to hit the hard water, it’s important to remember not to push the limits. Putting yourself or anyone else in danger.

Dugan continued, “Especially in the early season, it’s really important to check as you go. Because the thickness can change relatively quickly, where you could be standing on 6 inches of really great ice and then just a few feet away, it could be like a warm water spring underneath and the ice is only an inch thick.”

As a friendly reminder, don’t forget to check lake regulations. Follow state laws this ice fishing season and keep your lines tight.
