“Indivisible” engages local community in political activism
ST. PETER, Minn. (KEYC) -“Indivisible” is a national effort that began in 2017 that aims to educate on and provide venues for political activism.
The St. Peter-Greater Mankato chapter has been organizing events for the past seven years, and Monday the group took the opportunity to talk about both the presidential inauguration and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The event focused on the Reverend Doctor’s nonviolent protests and activism strategies, acting as a lesson on the effectiveness of political action.
“We wanted to put a focus on not despair about some of the negative directions that we think things are going but think in concrete ways about how we’re going to fight for this more positive life for everybody,” said the chapter’s founder Yurie Hong.
The program used the day’s presidential inauguration to add a background to political activism.
Students were encouraged to write their own presidential inauguration speeches to highlight the changes that they want to make in their community and the steps that will be needed to achieve those changes.
“It’s easy to read the news and feel despair about the way things are going. It feels better to do something about the things that you see that are problems.”
