UPDATE: Developer appears to withdraw mining plans near rural park
MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) - An update to a story we first brought to you Monday.
According to opposition organizers, the developer of a proposed gravel mine near Red Jacket Valley Park just south of Mankato appears to have withdrawn the proposal.
Residents near the site learned Sam Borneke, a local contractor, had applied for a Conditional Use permit to create a mine within the conservation district that is just a few hundred feet from Red Jacket Valley Park and nearby residences earlier this month.
A change.org petition was created by some of the residents around the area, a post that has gathered thousands of responses between signatures, comments and video responses
A post on the petition Tuesday evening said the application was withdrawn, citing the growing public outcry.
