NORTH MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) -As part of celebrating Autism Acceptance Month, Bridges Community School in North Mankato assembled a mural created by their own students.

Every student at the school decorated a slip of paper, representing who they are and what they represent, and those papers were intertwined with one another, creating a single piece that represents the entire student body.

“When we all come together and are involved and included and everyone is included we can create something beautiful and meaningful,” said the school’s art teacher Megan Fitzloff.

Leaders of the project said that a key factor in the project’s success was to get the school’s Special Education students in on the project, giving them an opportunity to be involved with the greater community and be treated as equals among their fellow students.

”This really showcases that together we are really stronger, that when we just honor who people are as individuals and who they are as people, that we really create a more colorful and wonderful world,” said Anna Reichel, a Special Education teacher at Bridges.
