MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) -

Daryl Rieke describes the feelings he has whenever he returns home; “Coming here is like here’s home, ya know. As soon as I drive up its like yeah, I really took a lot of pride in this house.”

Just southeast of Fairfax is Rieke’s home where he used to have everything he thought he wanted. But something was missing.

Rieke said, “The world tells ya that you need to have these things. That you’re supposed to have all the toys. And I didn’t really have the joy in it.” Rieke had a brand-new truck, a nice convertible, and his Harley.

“It’s going to be hard to - hard to get rid of this one (the harley) in the spring.”

Even though Rieke has a handle on his future plans, it still pulls at his heart strings.

He said, “It’s been a very emotional packing to be thinking, I’m giving up everything to go to the 3rd world.”

During Rieke’s long hours as a semi-truck driver, he felt called by a higher power to sell everything and go help people in need in Guatemala.

While in Guatemala he said, “You get to see these women that are in their mid-40s that are pregnant again because they’ve been assaulted again. They’re being provided for, they’re getting their food and they’re getting their shelter. But they don’t have that level of safety.”

Rieke bought some land that will provide a safe place for these women and children. He also plans to upkeep their community with his skills as a handyman and continue working with the church there.

“You know... it’s always going to be hard to say goodbye,” he said with tears in his eyes.

It took almost 2 years of discerning for Rieke to figure all of this out and he still has some work to do before he has cut all physical ties to Minnesota.

But he encourages others to find what they’re called to do.

“If they want to consider, what can they do? Think about their time, their talents and their treasure,” Rieke says donating any of those three things can be a large help to people in need in your community.

Rieke’s stuff will be for sale at a silent auction Sunday, November 2nd at Saint Andrew’s Church in Fairfax from 10am to 1pm.
