Local woman running Mankato 10k despite fighting pancreatic cancer
MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) - Thursday Morning, Mary Jane Hollerich was preparing for her first race in five years.
A few years ago, Hollerich was experiencing stomach cramps which she thought was from running. But it turned out to be a tumor the size of a lemon diagnosed as pancreatic cancer.
Hollerich explained, “When you start experiencing symptoms, it’s usually too late. Meaning, it has spread, it’s stage four, and so it’s a hidden cancer, it kind of goes undetected.”
Since her diagnosis, Hollerich has been surrounded by family, friends and coworkers who she says she couldn’t do it without.
“We’re working all together to support it. I’ve been open with my kids about my diagnosis and we’ve been just together and really relying on each other,” Hollerich said.
Hollerich’s father, Ron, says seeing her fight through this is no surprise by saying, “She has will power that don’t stop.”
“I am refusing to let it take over my life,” Hollerich affirms. “I’m continuing to fight. When I was first diagnosed, they told me to go home and get my affairs in order there’s nothing you can do.”
That was back in April of 2023; today, Hollerich continues to teach and run with her dog Bella and when she thought getting to church was too difficult, a feeling came upon her saying otherwise.
“I was actually out for a jog last April and something told me, ‘You need to get there’! I was like, ‘Oh okay!’ And I went there and ended up getting baptized that day,” Hollerich said.
Hollerich’s faith is driving her through this weekend’s race and wants her story to be a living testament while she’s still here.
“I just want to share my story and hopefully pass on some hope and inspiration for all those who are fighting or those who maybe have lost their battle to just keep going. Don’t give up, remain faithful and have that positive mindset,” Hollerich said.
Hollerich and her family encourage early cancer screening so people can see if their family carries the gene that makes you more susceptible to cancer.
