MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) - Tree removal was taking place in Sibley Park in Mankato on Wednesday to make room for the incoming Kern Bridge.

The $10.5 million project is underway, five years after the historic bridge was removed from the Le Sueur River and put into storage.

75% of that funding is from state and federal funding and the rest was funded locally.

Mankato Public Works says it’s glad to have some finality in this situation.

Interim Public Works Director Karl Keel said, “It preserves a very important historical bridge in the community. Secondly, it’ll provide a regional trail connection from Sibley Park across the Blue Earth River to Land of Memories Park.”

The bridge will gain new life as a pedestrian bridge connecting Sibley Park with Land of Memories Park.

Keel says the project is set to be completed by the fall of 2026.
