Mankato West students launch holiday light recycling drive

MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) - While there are still a few weeks to go in the holiday season, a group of students from Mankato West High School are launching a light recycling drive.

The Youth Eco Solutions Team (YES) at Mankato West High School is inviting the community to drop off old or broken holiday lights at several locations in Mankato through January 5. The materials collected will be responsibly recycled through Youth Eco Solutions, a statewide program that encourages student leadership in sustainability.

“We want to help our community celebrate the holidays in a greener way,” said members of the Mankato West YES Team. “Recycling holiday lights keeps harmful materials out of landfills and supports responsible waste management. Even a small donation makes a difference.”

Drop off locations include:

• Mankato West High School, Main Office
• Children’s Museum of Southern Minnesota
• DeGrood’s, with special thanks for providing collection boxes
• Center for Learning, 15 Map Drive

The Mankato West YES Team, composed of dedicated student leaders, will collect and manage all recycling. YES has set a statewide goal of collecting and recycling 750 pounds of holiday lights.
