MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) - As the school year nears its end, it’s time to plan for what happens when the kids are out for the summer, particularly what they’ll eat.

The Mankato school district reports an ever-increasing rate of food insecurity, and is bringing back its free summer meal program.

Free breakfast and lunch all summer long for anyone 18 and younger, just show up to any of the 6 participating schools;

Washington Elementary, Franklin Elementary, Rosa Parks Elementary, Roosevelt Elementary, East High School and the Center for Learning, along with food trucks at Spring Lake Park Jaycee Park and Dublin Crossing Apartments at select times.

That program runs from May 26 through August 21.

“We do have pockets of food insecurity in our community and it’s important that we make sure that we reach those children during the summer so that they have the nourishment that they need to not only grow but also to be learners in the fall,” said Darcy Stueber, the district’s Director of Nutritional Services.

Elsewhere, FOCP and the Backpack Food Program is also preparing for a busy summer.

Summer is the organization’s busiest season, serving up to 1300 students every weekend.

It’s an effort that will have volunteers working around the clock to keep up with, and leaders of the effort said that preparation has already begun.

“We are here for everybody. Gas is getting expensive, groceries are getting expensive, and we don’t want anyone to feel like they can’t get the help they need. If you need us just for the summer please contact us.”
