End of an Era — and a Sweet New Beginning — at Mankato’s Dairy Queen West
After 35 years, the Galli family passes the torch at a beloved Mankato institution
MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) - For decades, Dairy Queen on Mankato’s west side has been more than a place to grab a Blizzard. It’s been a community gathering spot, a first job for dozens of young workers, and a family legacy built on loyalty.
Now, that legacy is changing hands.
Owner JoRae Galli Storm has announced the sale of Dairy Queen West to husband-and-wife team Chris Kunst and Chantal Heetland — a transition she says felt “meant to be.”
The location has been a Mankato staple since 1973. Her father, Joe Galli — known throughout the community as “DQ Joe” — purchased it in 1990, and JoRae took over in 2006 after leaving a corporate career in human resources.
“My dad always said, ‘we serve up fun and create memories for many,’” Storm said. “That’s exactly what this place has been about for our family for the past 35 years.”
Over 35 years, the Galli family employed 129 team members — and never once ran a help-wanted ad. Nearly every hire came through relationships and referrals.
Storm said finding the right buyer was critical. Kunst and Heetland are current partners in Jersey Mike’s, bringing franchise experience and a shared commitment to community.
“We were drawn to this Dairy Queen because of the incredible reputation, strong culture and deep connection to the community,” said Heetland. “We are beyond excited to continue that legacy.”
Customers can expect familiar faces and the same level of service throughout the transition.
Storm’s final shift is Thursday, May 21. She says what’s next includes a well-earned break — and more time with family.
“Stepping back right now seems like the perfect time while still being proud of what my family created,” she said.
