Mankato Juneteenth to return to Civic Center Plaza

MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) - Local groups are preparing for Mankato’s annual Juneteenth celebration.

This year will be the ninth year of the Greater Mankato Diversity Council’s Juneteenth celebration, this year returning to Civic Center Plaza, with the annual Freedom Walk beginning at the Shared Spaces building.

The group has organized the event since before the day became a national holiday in 2021 and said that the best part of the annual event is how it’s grown to include every corner of the local community.

“It’s for everyone. We want everyone to come enjoy the event, we want everyone to be able to have a good time, and it’s not just about the history it’s about coming together as a community,“ the council’s Josephine Bohn said.

The celebration begins at 3 p.m. on June 19, with the Freedom Walk beginning at 2:30 p.m.
