Habitat for Humanity begins work on first local veteran’s project
EAGLE LAKE, Minn. (KEYC) - Habitat for Humanity has broken ground on its first veterans build in southern Minnesota.
Michael Huiras spent six years in the Navy and has been hopping rental properties since he developed a lung issue in 2019.
Now the Huiras family is getting a home to call their own in Eagle Lake, and groups like local American Legions and the Blue Earth County Sheriff’s Office have committed to pitch in to help.
This is south central Minnesota’s first build through Habitat for Humanity’s Veterans Build program.
“Having it built and calling it our own it is really special. It means the world to be able to invest in something ourselves too,“ Huiras said at the project’s groundbreaking.
Next week will be Habitat for Humanity’s Bike Build Home fundraiser that will raise funds for housing projects just like this one. That will be on Wednesday, July 15, at Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato.
