DNR issues ice safety warning
MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) - The unusually warm weather conditions has prompted the Minnesota DNR to issue an ice safety warning.
The DNR says warm temperatures are especially impacting small ponds and drainage ditches which can be magnets for curious children. These places don’t attract ice anglers, so they often get over looked when thinking about safety.
Eight children under the age of 10 have died in the past 25 years going through such ice. The DNR is reminding everyone that any ice can be dangerous, and it’s important to talk with children about all types of ice safety.
“Just really important right now that people are thinking about those small bodies of water and reminding their kids talking with neighbors. Families, friends about the danger so that everybody remembers to just stay off those small bodies of water where the ice is becoming dangerous,” said Nicole Biaggi.
According to the DNR’s ice safety coordinator, if there are rocks, logs or anything dark in color, the sun will heat those items up, causing the ice to melt faster.
